Beaver is spending the day at Larry’s when they go into Larry’s sister’s room to snoop around and come across her diary. Larry eggs Beaver on to read it, but after a few pages Mrs Mondello walks in on them and starts going off at Larry about intruding on his sister’s privacy.
That same afternoon Larry phones Beaver to tell him he’s running away. It doesn’t take long for Mrs Mondello to show up at the Cleaver’s front door, thinking that if Larry should ever run away Beaver would probably be the one he’d run away to. While Ward is consoling her they figure out Larry is hiding there, after all. Ward goes upstairs to investigate and finds Larry’s hiding place.
As is expected Larry gets a serious scolding from his mother and some kind, but stern advice from Ward that helps set him straight. After they leave Ward goes upstairs to the boys’ room where they are awaiting their turn to be lectured for their part in the situation.
Their punishment is to pull weeds in the garden. During this they reflect on how they could have handled the situation better by just going to their father and telling him Larry was in trouble.
